Jack smelled the smoke the moment he got out of his truck.� From across the yard, he could see that every window in the house was open, the front door ajar, the smoke detector blaring.�

Jack dropped his bags and raced across the driveway.� He paused at the open door, trying to catch his breath.� Smoke permeated the kitchen.� There was flour on the floor, flour on the walls, flour on the ceiling.� Two burned cake tins sat on the stove.� And there Ennis stood, glaring and cussing.������

�

ldquo;Ennis, what the fuckhellip;?rdquo; Jack tried not to laugh.��

Ennis turned, startled. ldquo;Bud, yoursquo;re early.� Wanted to surprise you.rdquo;

Jack walked across the kitchen, biting his lip to keep from laughing as he noticed the cake batter in Ennisrsquo; hair.� He reached up, brushing some flour off the manrsquo;s neck.� ldquo;Forty yearshellip;forty years and you still surprise me...you really do.rdquo;�

Ennis grinned.�
